Edinburgh Castle

We begin our tour at Scotland’s most famous castle, dominating Edinburgh’s skyline and perched dramatically upon an extinct volcano. One of the oldest fortresses in Europe, the Castle invites us to step into the world of kings, peasants, and everyone in between as we learn about the capital’s tumultuous past.

Among many other unmissable highlights, we visit the lavish Royal Palace, explore the restored medieval glory of the Great Hall, and learn about the famous (and very punctual) One O’Clock Gun. We also behold the glimmering Honours of Scotland, the oldest Royal Regalia in Britain and known more commonly as the Scottish Crown Jewels.

The Royal Mile

Next we head down the esplanade along the Royal Mile, a historic thoroughfare named for being a ‘Scots mile’ long and connecting the two royal residences of Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. We make our way down this cobblestoned stretch, following in the footsteps of kings, queens, poets and rogues as we encounter medieval tenements, inviting closes, and vibrant shops, each telling a story of the city’s colourful past.

St Giles Cathedral

Along the Royal Mile we stop at a sacred place of worship with more than 900 years of history: the venerated St Giles Cathedral, with striking stone pillars and iconic spire rising into the Old Town’s silhouette. Originally founded in 1124 by King David I of Scotland, The Cathedral has borne witness to many significant events in Scottish history and still holds daily church services today. It is also home to the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s very own, royally chosen company of chivalrous knights.

Here we will see where the body of Queen Elizabeth II was brought from her Balmoral estate in 2022, to lie in state for one day as the Crown of State was laid on her coffin and a Service of Thanksgiving was held for her life. Thousands of people came to pay their respects. The following year the Cathedral once again held a royal service, this time to present King Charles III with the Crown Jewels of Scotland.

The Scottish Parliament

Coming to the end of the Royal Mile, we arrive at the Scottish Parliament building, the official home of the Scottish Parliament since 2004. Here we discover the most recent chapter in Scotland’s political history, starting with the 1999 referendum that granted the Scottish Parliament the right to legislate in all areas that are not explicitly reserved to the UK Parliament. We discover Parliament from the outside as we take in the uniqueness of both this modern Edinburgh landmark and the democratic nation governed from within it.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse

Our last stop brings us to His Majesty the King’s official residence in Scotland, dating back to 1128. Standing at the gates of the Palace we take in what has over the years been the site of royal births, deaths, murders, burials, plots and wars, now opening its historical doors to the public. Built and expanded over by multiple kings over many centuries, the ancient Palace of Holyrood House is still used today as both a Royal Palace and the setting for State ceremonies and entertaining.
